Missing Talent

03-05-16

A client had been searching for a new employee which involved lots of data checking, creating spreadsheets, etc and they were struggling to find the right person.

They wanted somebody with good administrative skills and attention to detail but most importantly somebody who would be reliable and consistent in their work.

We had several interviews, we even had people trial in the role who just did not work out. They soon made mistakes or became quickly unreliable in time keeping.

Around this time I received an application from a candidate who had extensive background in Project management, IT systems and Engineering.

I initially spoke with him and told him that he may well find the role would be too mundane and simple compared to what he had been used to.

He was simply at his ‘wits end’ because since Christmas he had been applying for local jobs only to be told he was ‘over-qualified’ and he would not stick with the job.

The truth is he wanted to settle in to a local role where he could earn some money and have time to spare to spend with his family. He was not driven by the money or the status of a job, he was driven by the desire to work, enjoy his work but be able to come home to his family every night.

Nobody was giving him the opportunity to show the other qualities which stood out to me; reliability, commitment and professionalism.

I sent his CV through to the client along with a long overview of this gentleman, his situation and my belief that he would be an asset and a committed, able member to their team.

They decided to see him for an interview but admitted that they were only meeting with him on my recommendation. If they were just going by is CV they would not have given him an interview, too qualified sprang to mind!

He attended the interview and they liked him a lot, they offered him the job and he accepted.

He has now been with the company for a month working on a temp to perm basis.

I checked in with them last week and all going great so far.

Our job as Recruitment consultants is not only to try and fill a job vacancy. It is to understand you and your business so that we can understand who will fit in to your team.

We also get to know our candidates, to look beyond the CV and dig deeper. Sometimes, it is surprising what gems you find.

We take the time to do this and more importantly, we take the time it takes to do this, out of your hands.

We make it our job to go that little bit further and not just tick the boxes but stuff them full with all the attributes you look for in an employee – reliability, commitment, loyalty, integrity and a great attitude to work.
